So you Fancy a Vintage Dress
So, you’ve fallen down the vintage rabbit hole – welcome! Whether you're a die-hard retro queen or you’ve just stumbled across the magic of a 1970s boho sleeve, buying a vintage wedding dress is a bit different from nipping into a high street wedding shop. But that’s half the joy of it.
Here’s a wee guide from me – Beverley – to help you find your dream vintage wedding frock, without getting tangled up in a net petticoat or a puff sleeve that could house a pigeon.
Know your vintage from your “vintage-inspired”
If you're coming to Tricker Bridal, you’re getting the real deal. My dresses are true vintage – mostly from the 1950s to the 1990s – and have lived lives before you. That might mean the odd teeny imperfection, but it also means authenticity, charm, and a story woven into every stitch. There’s a big difference between a modern dress styled to look vintage, and one that actually saw the inside of a 1960s church hall or a 1980s disco reception. Be careful that you’re not being sold a vintage inspired dress – if it’s a true vintage gown you covet.
Check the condition (and don’t be afraid of the word ‘restored’)
Every dress in my collection has been checked, cleaned and often restored by hand (with quite a lot of muttering and the occasional cup of tea). Some have been lightly altered to bring them back to their best, but always sympathetically. I’ll always be honest about condition – I’ve got no time for surprises … unless they involve cake, flowers or champagne.
Be open-minded about size
Vintage sizes are a law unto themselves. A 1950s size 12 is more like a modern 8. So, focus on your actual measurements rather than the number on the label. I list full measurements for every dress – and if you’re visiting me in the salon in Aberdeen, you can try them on properly and have a twirl.
Think about your era
Do you love the full skirts and nipped waists of the 50s? The short mod shapes of the 60s? Or maybe you're drawn to the floaty, romantic styles of the 70s boho bride? Choosing a decade that fits your personality (and your Spotify wedding playlist, let’s be honest) can help narrow things down.
Consider your setting
A 1980s puff sleeve gown looks glorious in a grand Scottish castle. A 60s mini-dress could be perfect for a city hall elopement or a chic registry office do. And 70s lace is pretty much made for barefoot beach weddings. Think about your venue, your season, and how the dress will work with your surroundings.
You might need a little tweak
Some vintage gowns are perfect as-is. Others might need a nip, tuck or hem – or a bit of clever strap repositioning. That’s all part of the process. I’ll always tell you what’s possible before you buy.
It’s sustainable AND budget-friendly
Let’s not forget, buying vintage is so much kinder to the planet than buying new. And every true vintage dress at Tricker Bridal is under £399 – which means you can afford to splash out on your shoes, your honeymoon, or that extra tier of wedding cake.
Finally – listen to your gut (and your granny)
If you put it on and feel like dancing, grinning, or swishing about like you're in a black-and-white film, that's probably your dress. Sometimes, your granny will spot it before you do. Always trust a woman who’s lived through shoulder pads.
Whether you're shopping online or coming in to see me in Aberdeen, I’m here to help you find your vintage match. I only ever buy dresses I love – so there’s a little bit of my heart in each one. Can’t wait to help you find the one that makes your heart skip.
